It has been pointed out time and again that the signers of the American Declaration of Independence were without exception, white, propertied men. For the most part this is true, so if we accept this as given, let's take a moment to think about all that these prosperous men were willing to give up by their rebellion against an oppressive government, and the founding of the first liberal democracy in modern history.
