Recent read comment why does a story not work

I recently read a mystery called Devil's Food , one of a relatively new series about a baker. The character was charming and I thought the author did a really good job of integrating a fairly large cast, making nearly all of them feel like real people who were part of the main character's world. Some tabloid I picked up today had an article (titled something like "Is Rob a Rude Dude?") that had a pic of him beside it.  Rather recent, I guess, because his hair reflects the recent cut.  Anyway, it worried me slightly, because he didn't look well in the picture.  I can't put my finger on anything specific, but aside from the expected occasional dark circles, he just didn't seem healthy.  Silly to assume that from a pic, probably, but all the same.
