Proof That Evolutionary Psychology is Nonsense

Here's an absolutely first-rate article about the problems with evolutionary psychology . It's 4 pages long, but exceptionally worth reading, in large part because it discusses various pieces of hard evidence that disprove a number of major claims prominent proponents of evo psych have made. Initially, the fact that so much of this discipline is made up of exceedingly bad science made it difficult to disprove, the article discusses why: From its inception, evolutionary psychology had warned... read more

Three things that drive me nuts reading evolutionary psychology: Calling adaptive structures "designed" to solve problems our ancestors faced. Ew, no. Patting themselves on the back for being the lone unbelievers of Empiricism's blank slate. The brain IS A COMPUTER. Your neurons ARE LIKE CIRCUITS. Yeah, the brain doesn't grow in response to input or anything. Totally closed system, that. "Oh it's a FIRMWARE UPGRADE." I hate this metaphor. All three of these problems seem to come from...

Objections to Christianity I : The Bible Does Not Inform Our Morals

Clive Staples Lewis was and is certainly one of the most influential Christian writers of our time. His immense popularity has soared with the film versions of his stories being released to critical acclaim. He also wrote a number of theological non-fiction books, among them, Mere Christianity . In this book, Lewis makes the case for "mere Christianity" by arguing that the ideas of goodness and justice, which we find are common to all cultures, and that this standard, which he calls "The Law of...

Atheism 101 (how to train an atheist to take on the world, and win)

For fuck’s sake, Pop science is killing atheism. Jesus, why hasn’t anybody done something about this? God help us if it ever turns into a full blown ideology. Good God man, what’s the world coming to? . . . PS you owe us a big favour. (1) A. F. Chalmers: What is this thing called Science? 3rd Edition UQP Paper Backs. 2007 This is your most important text. If you only read one text read this, if you read two, read Kuhn first, then read this. This will give you the basic philosophical training for...

How to study religion from an evolutionary perspective

Over winter break I had the opportunity to work with a professor on a personal project delving into the study of religion from an evolutionary perspective.  Specifically, my focus was on finding an appropriate methodology.  The result was a 23-page paper, which I won't subject you to, but a brief summary of the major approaches might be interesting. I was specifically interested in the problem of religious change - the paradox that religions, those self-proclaimed guardians of unchanging eternal...

Rationality and Faith

One of the problems with discussing issues of faith with theists is that so very, very few come to their faith by process of reason. It's what divides the masses from philosophers of religion and theologians. Recently, I've come to find a similar thing from atheists. The vast majority of atheists I encounter can't defend their beliefs. Indeed, their inability to reason often leads them to hold bizarre and untenable beliefs (such as bald naturalism, logical positivism, and evolutionary psychology...
