Stripping EL wire is hard. Even a good, self-adjusting wire stripper sometimes cuts the tiny corona wires that encircle the main wire. Troy suggested that the easiest way to strip EL wire is to use a lighter to melt the insulation and the internal plastic sheath. Not liking the relative imprecision of a lighter's flame, I decided to use the barrel of my soldering iron instead (I use the barrel instead of the tip in case the plastic residue would corrupt the soldered connections in some way).
