Stop. Do not pass go. Do not attempt to splice EL wire without quick-connects. Okay, that might be a little bit overzealous, but I have definitely learned my lesson. I did two three-way splices and they seemed pretty robust, but applying the same technique to a five-way splice was totally over the line.
