Well, here goes: I once had a professor (young, not too long out of his own PhD program) who was giving me some advice on admissions. He said that grad schools putting together a class for an English Lit program will only take a limited number of students (I think he said 6-12) and within that class the committees try to put together a nice little hodge-podge of interests.
