Darfur: If you don't know, EDUCATE yourslf!

This is for anyone who doesn't know about the conflict in Darfur. You need to know. The Darfur conflict is a complex crisis in the Darfur region of western Sudan. One side of the armed conflict is composed mainly of the Sudanese military and the Janjaweed, a militia group recruited mostly from the Arab Baggara tribes of the northern Rizeigat, camel-herding nomads. The other side comprises a variety of rebel groups, notably the Sudan Liberation Movement and the Justice and Equality Movement, recruited... read more

Janjaweed Peace / The Problem With Peace in Darfur

My reader doth know that I am a humble man, but I would be doing myself an injustice if I did not declare the following: I believe today's column will in time be regarded as one of the best "Essays on our Times" that I have written. Such a pleasure to scribble phrases such as "I have not the space, in this short column, to enter into the deeper history of the Darfur conflict, which in turn requires some knowledge of developments in the region over the last six centuries" - as if I have such knowledge...

Israel turns away Darfur refugees

http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/meast/08/19/israel.darfur/index.html Arab militias supported by Sudan's government have committed numerous human rights atrocities, U.N. officials say, including the slaughter and gang rape of civilians, destruction of water sources, looting and burning of buildings and crops. Earlier this month, Israel's Channel 10 interviewed Israeli soldiers who said they had witnessed Egyptian security officers executing several Darfur refugees. According to Channel 10, their...

Spielberg withdraws from Beijing Olympics over Darfur Crisis

The American film director Steven Spielberg has resigned as an artistic adviser to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. In a statement he accused China of not doing enough to pressure its ally Sudan to end the "continuing human suffering" in the troubled western Darfur region. At least 200,000 people have been killed and two million forced from their homes in the five-year conflict in Darfur. Beijing has not yet responded to the move, which correspondents say is its first big setback...

Students making a difference: Idaho teen creates Darfur video

Subscribers to GI-NET’s member newsletter may remember the inspiring story of Logan Tranmer: a 14-year-old student in Boise, Idaho who decided to raise awareness of the genocide in Darfur by collecting more than 1,000 signatures to encourage the UN to speed the deployment of UNAMID and distributing her own t-shirts and wristbands. We are proud to report that Logan is at it again—this time by creating her own video to raise awareness of the conflict in Darfur! The video won her first place in...
