It was Carl and Christina's 3rd wedding anniversary. At the request of Christina, they had decided to forego the traditional anniversary gifts that Carl preferred, (last year he had given her a pair of garnet earrings and she had given him a couple cotton shirts), and instead give each what the other asked for, no matter what.
