We had an old two-shelf bookshelf that was old and termite eaten, and today it suddenly collapsed and broke apart. We knew it was coming because the shelf was so termite eaten that you could poke your finger straight through the wall at various points. With most of the wood gone it was very light too, I had no problem at all carrying the pieces down the stairs and out the door.
