Alright, this is it. I still haven't seen Charlie Wilson's War, The Kite Runner, 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days or the Golden Globe winner, Atonement. However I'm hedging my bets that none of these films will make my list (the only one that might force me to amend this list is 4 Months) - Atonement especially, since no matter how good it is, these types of movies I'm just principly against. X: Joel and Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men (2007) I've long been a fan of the Coen brothers and, whilst I can see the argument that their parodic streak undercuts empathy with their characters, I think we do still care. Of late, however, I've not been so sure. I disliked Intolerable Clooney , which wasn't their own script, and didn't go near The Ladykillers with a ten-foot proverbial. La Vita è Bella [Life is Beautiful] (1997) directed, written by and starring Roberto Benigni. Also starring Nicoletta Braschi, Georgio Cantarini. Woah. I put off seeing this film for ages, as I have a real fear of films that will upset me too much and make me cry. I knew beforehand from publicity that the story was about a Jewish man who tries to comfort his small son in a concentration camp by pretending everything's a game - and there's no way that story could not be heartwrenching! ... read more
