When I left Germany in the late eighties, the country was undergoing a green revolution. Over the decade that followed, draconian recycling schemes were put into place that made me blush when I had to ask for a plastic bag, having disembarked at Düsseldorf Airport without a shopping basket (these days I may not dare disembarking at the airport).
