25 hypotheses on ateneans

*taken from http://thisisnotadebate.blogspot.com Don't be daunted by the length. It's worth your time. This one's by Mr. Leland Dela Cruz, Department of Development Studies Chair. My take on this: honestly, I can't relate. Maybe it's because my family's not filthy rich, I'm a scholar, and maybe I'm from another period in time--hey, I'd really like to be a 'professional for others' after I graduate, and I won't really mind if I remain middle class. :p And I'm still innocent, really. ü (You'll... read more

apocrypha

Found some an old scraps of paper (ranging in age from a few months ago to a couple of years ago) upon which I wrote some notes of ideas to be investigated further, at a later date. I think I may begin transcribing these "nuggets" here in order to detract from the shit storm of small scraps of paper like this that are currently strewn about my room and contained within my "archives." Keep in mind that I have no idea what I was getting at with some of the older ones (e.g. item E). (A) **Research...

Hypotheses, and Philosophy of Science

MOE H3 Essentials of Modern Physics is just round the corner in a little less than 5 hours, and as I was deriving the expression for Compton scattering, something amazing just hit me. The oft-quoted remark that science essentially comprises two main trends at its least - hypothesis (conjecture)and refutation, rings true almost all the time. It is easy to neglect how much science has been driven by hypotheses made, which sometimes have to be understood in the context of discovery, against what the...

Baloney Detection Kit: Use it Everywhere....

---------------------------------------- ------------------------------------ Warning signs that suggest deception. Based on the book by Carl Sagan "The Demon Haunted World". The following are suggested as tools for testing arguments and detecting fallacious or fraudulent arguments: Wherever possible there must be independent confirmation of the facts. Encourage substantive debate on the evidence by knowledgeable proponents of all points of view. Arguments from authority carry little...

Linguistics; talking [and not talking] about scutwork; part four...

This has been an excellent discussion, and a paradigmatic example of the Working On The Car metaphor -- the one we constructed as a group several years ago -- in action. The goal that I had when I started the discussion was to get the problem out in the open where it could be talked about; you've made it possible for me to reach that goal several times over, and I thank you for that. I've learned a great deal from your comments, and I thank you for that as well. Now I'm not sure exactly where...

first of summer..

For some weird reason, today is the official day of summer for me even though I haven't had school for the past 3 months. Haha, it's probably because my siblings all ended their schooling yesterday. So that means more competition with the PC, the ps2 (argh, I want an Xbox 360!), the TV, and FOOD AROUND THE HOUSE! Believe me, even if I am the eldest of four and my sister isn't much of the eater, my  2 younger brothers are carnivores to death!  That reminds me.. Happy Birthday to my younger brother...
