Does your current occupation affect your self-worth? (current question from Livejournal)

Does your current occupation affect your self-worth? What a good question...since I seem to not be too happy with my occupation lately...and honestly, I think that I am unhappy just with the people I work with...or rather one or two people I work with that don't appreciate me for my abilities and my accomplishments and my contribution...and the environment in which I work...not necessarily the occupation (although the hours suck) or the company I work for...so, as short and somewhat vague as that...

War and Occupation, American-style

posted June 03, 2008 4:14 pm Tomgram: Chris Hedges American soldiers have long scrawled messages to the enemy on the bombs they were about to deliver. In the The Making of the Atomic Bomb , Richard Rhodes reminds us, for instance, that "Little Boy," the bomb that would inaugurate a new age over Hiroshima, "was inscribed with autographs and messages, some of them obscene. 'Greetings to the Emperor from the men of the Indianapolis ,' one challenged." (The Indianapolis , a heavy cruiser which...

Not War, Occupation: Part 1

On March 19 th , 2003 , the United States invaded Iraq .   This was not the first time, no more than it is that peoples’ first experience of occupation and the depredations that must always ensure.   Iraq , or Mesopotamia as it has been called from antiquity to 1917, has fought many wars, but this is not one of them.   They have won and lost wars of varying scale and significance, many times enduring the pang of setback.   They have lost cities...

Iraqis oppose US occupation (surprise!)

This article notes that even a majority of Iraqi lawmakers oppose the US occupation, in addition to the vast majority of Iraqis for a long time now.  Too bad they don't matter and that the US government knows what's best for them.

The occupation of a box as a toy model for the seismic cycle of a fault. [arXiv:physics/0502048v5 UP

The occupation of a box as a toy model for the seismic cycle of a fault. [arXiv:physics/0502048v5 UPDATED] We illustrate how a simple statistical model can describe the quasiperiodic occurrence of large earthquakes. The model idealizes the loading of elastic energy in a seismic fault by the stochastic filling of a box. The emptying of the box after it is full is analogous to the generation of a large earthquake in which the fault relaxes after having been loaded to its failure threshold...
